Design exhibition of Luc(as) de Groot

4. March - 9. April 2004

On view in the NLB Gallery Avla are works from the field of typography and illustration which were created in the last 12 years. Special emphasis will be given to works connected to Luc(as) de Groot's largest project, the Thesis super family, which the author of the opening text, typographer Friederich Forssman describes as a reasonable and by far the most well-built typeface, which is marked by conceptual and formal tension as well as wit, so typical of its author.

Dutch born graphic designer from the Netherlands Luc(as) de Groot (1963) studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Having completed his studies, he spent four years with the Dutch designer group BRS Premsela Vonk while at the same time freelancing and teaching at the Art Academy in Den Bosch. In 1993, he moved to Berlin to join MetaDesign and worked with Erik Spiekermann. As typographic director at MetaDesign he worked on a diversity of corporate design projects from logos, magazine concepts and custom typefaces, to fine tuning and implementing type.

His best-known type family is Thesis which has grown one of the largest and most comprehensive digital type families available on the market. In 1997, he accepted a half time teaching position at the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam where he lectures on type development. In the same year, he founded FontFabrik which offers services like type- and logo-development as well as digital implementation to design and advertising agencies. He has designed corporate identity typefaces for various clients, including the company Sun Microsystem from the U.S.A., the Dutch Ministry of Transport, the Heineken brewery, the newspapers Der Spiegel, Taz and the French Le Monde among many others.
